Besides passing out Valentine’s Day cards and eating sweets today, take time to read to your children or students. The following reading activity is for children in first through third grades

Read a short picture book, like The Yuckiest Stinkiest Best Valentine Ever by Brenda Ferber, aloud to your children or students. Tell them you are not going to show them the pictures in the book as you read. Instead, you want them to create pictures of the characters in their minds. Explain to the children that by creating their own mental pictures of the characters, the place where the story happens, and what the characters are doing can actually help them enjoy and understand the story better. Note: If you’d like, after you’ve read the story without showing children the illustrations, show them the illustrations and have them talk about how these pictures are the alike or different from their mental pictures.

This reading activity comes from my upcoming book, HELPING CHILDREN LEARN TO READ THROUGH MULTI-SENSORY READING ACTIVITIES: A HANDBOOK & RESOURCE GUIDE
FOR PARENTS & TEACHERS

Even boys will fall in love with this valentine! Here is a hilarious take on the holiday that boys love to hate, the most complex holiday of them all. Saying “I love you” has never been so yucky or so sweet.

Leon has a crush. A let-her-cut-in-line-at-the-water-fountain kind of crush. And he’s got the perfect valentine. But this valentine has no intention of getting caught up in any romantic conspiracy. “Love is yucky, kid! Valentine’s Day is all about CANDY!”
